Hemai Parthasarathy, Ph.D.

Senior Partner

Hemai specializes in scientific strategy and communications for institutions and companies in the life sciences sector.  Combining a background of experimental research with extensive professional experience in evaluating and communicating scientific research, she advises clients on how best to focus and portray their research portfolios to diverse audiences.  Hemai has worked with national research institutes, non-profit organizations, pharmaceutical companies and early-stage biotechnology companies to tell their unique research and development stories to researchers, customers, investors, donors and the public.

Prior to entering the consulting world,  Hemai was a founding editor at the Public Library of Science (PLoS), where she worked to establish a series of successful open-access journals, including PLoS Biology and PLoS ONE. As the Managing Editor of PLoS Biology, she led an international team that published research articles and magazine content across all areas of the biological sciences. Hemai began her editorial career at Nature, where she evaluated and selected research articles for publication, with a focus on neuroscience. She currently contributes her experience in scientific publishing to the Society for Neuroscience, by serving on the Publications Committee for the Journal of Neuroscience.

In addition to her work as an editor, Hemai has published several articles, commentaries and editorials. She has also led numerous seminars and presentations on scientific communication, open access, and “alternative careers” in science. Her complete publications list is available here.

Hemai holds a Ph.D. in Systems Neuroscience from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor’s degree in Biophysics (with a minor in Russian Language and Literature) from The Johns Hopkins University.
